Good article. I vacillate between going all-in for a stud SP (like Mize) especially with the likelihood of Sale's eventual and inevitable diminished skills and a lockout for '27. With the terrific start to this season it seems like now is the time to be aggressive. However, I also understand Tom's point. Maybe Waldrep and Ritchie (and maybe Schwellenbach and Murphy) will miraculously find a groove and supplant Holmes, Elder, and/or Perez. Lopez is looking better. This would be the less risky route if it worked but I think the chances are slim. Some or all of the young guns may eventually be really good but it will be after the Chris Sale era.
Lindsay, what about Joe Ryan? He has been really good and, I believe, his contract extends into next year.
If there was a SP for the Braves to go after, Mize is probably the guy. But SPs are the definition of a distorted market described in “Money Ball”. The cost in terms of prospects and money for an extension is going to be very high. Most likely prohibitively high in my opinion. My very contrarian biew is the Braves have the pitching depth to get the job done. Braves need a little positive regression, better health, effective workload management and flexibility.
I’m not sure that we can trade for enough pieces to make a run. We’ve just not been a very good baseball team for a month now.
