(i) As set forth below, for each Qualified Free Agent subject
to compensation whom it signs, the signing Club (“Signing
Club”) shall have its Signing Bonus Pool in the next international
signing period (as described in Attachment 46) reduced and/or
forfeit one or more selections in the next Rule 4 Draft, as follows:
(B) Draft Selections Subject to Forfeiture. With the exception of draft selections awarded to a Club pursuant to Major League Rule 4(c)(2) or 4(k)(2), all of a Club’s selections will
be subject to forfeiture pursuant to subsection 4(c)(i) above,
including selections awarded pursuant to subsection 4(b)
above. Notwithstanding the foregoing, Competitive Balance
Selections obtained through an assignment from another Club
will be subject to forfeiture. If a Club’s second-highest, third
highest or fifth-highest selection is a selection exempt from
forfeiture under this section, the Club shall forfeit its next
highest available selection.
And honestly in reading your comment and reading this I am still extremely fuzzy on this. I get the feeling like 4 people in the world know this for sure.
So based on what I’ve read and I’m working pretty hard at finding it in the CBA specifically our ROY pick is protected so we can’t lose that pick if we sign a QO player. It would still be the same pick from before.
If you trust your player development system (i don't) you keep your pick and try to move your farm system out of the bottom 3 or 4 for the last 5 years running.
I mean to be fair those are just rankings. The fact we have been in a competitive window every year but last and have churned out Strider, Harris, Schwelly, Baldwin. Not exactly sure why there would be a lack of trust in the player development system. We’ve had multiple rookie of the year winners.
Everybody I've talked to says it's not protected, including people in the league. Under 4(c)2(a), "With the exception of draft selections forfeited by the Club pursuant to Major League Rule 3(c)(4)(B), all of a Club’s draft selections will be counted in determining the Club’s second-highest, third-highest or fifth-highest available selections, including compensatory selections awarded pursuant to sub- section 4(b) above and selections awarded pursuant to Major League Rules 4(c)(2), 4(k)(1), 4(k)(2) or 4(l) (or acquired via an assignment)."
It explicitly says "all" picks, excluding the picks you've already forfeit.
Just to be clear, I'm not saying you're wrong, and ultimately I need the league to affirmatively confirm this one way or the other. Because I've heard it both ways, but the people I've talked to within the league recently told me it could be forfeit
If you sign a Type A you lose $500,00 from the 2017 international class. We could lose the shortstop Sena who has a $5.8 million dollar hankshake deal.
It would be insane to lose that pick and possibly Sena.
Yeah I trust you did your homework. As far as content with the exception of maybe JT when he was on the beat I can’t come up with one name I value their baseball opinion as much as yours with regard to the Braves. In 15 years of daily Braves coverage, it’s not even close. I don’t know what I’d do if you shut this/the pod down haha.
Operating under the assumption your contacts are right on this, this really sucks. I’m going to post what I found in the CBA and maybe it’s something you can float over to them but dude if we are talking a pick around 30-34 and 3M in slot money, I just have such a difficult time seeing AA going after a player with a QO.
I just really wished that the league office would email me back. I sent them an email a couple days ago asking about this and have not yet heard back. I'm going to reach out to the PA next - I know a few guys over there
I agree with you Patrick. I think it would be very strange indeed if AA gave up that pick and the draft pool for a QO. Ahh baseball will be here soon......ahh da winter. The dang winter....
Okay CBA verbage as promised:

Found it in the CBA (page 106), can confirm the pick is protected.
