What you're writing about Hefner sounds good. He does sound better than Kranny, but good in a different approach.
From than Sale/Schwelly anecdote, it seems like Kranny was standing firm in his ways when came to analytics, and the team was not going to be able to move forward in that aspect as long as he was the coach.
I think this move for Hefner feels more imposed on Weiss rather than chosen by Weiss.
Imposed by whom? I can't see AA telling Weiss who his pitching coach will be. McGuirk? Six months ago I might have believed that but with the activity of the last few days, I get the feeling the organization has, maybe, learned a painful lesson after last year's disaster and some aggressive changes are needed.
I definitely can see AA telling Weiss who his pitching coach will be, or at least telling him Kranny is not coming back. We're moving in this direction, and these are our options.
"In those six years, Hefner did a few notable things for the Mets, whose pitchers had the sixth-best ERA (4.02) during that span with the fourth-fewest hits and fifth-most strikeouts."
How do they Braves stats compared to these? Because I know in 2024 they had the best ERA, and a Cy Young, and last year they were up there for a while too.
2024 was the best ERA, yeah, and Kranny had them inside the top ten in ERA I believe four times. Their average over the entire stretch was outside the top ten, if I ran those numbers right
I understand pitchers in the Babe Ruth era PROBABLY threw in the 80s and seemed to have rubber arms.
What if any pitch 100 miles per hour and over is called a ball as long as you don't swing at it ?
I remember in 1990 the 90 mph fastball was called "The Coin of the Realm"
Today a 90 mph fastball is called Batting Practice. And Tommy Johns are everywhere.
