After Holmes' last start (a good one) he said that after throwing a bull pen with Joey Bart, Bart told him, "When you throw in the pen, you have the best stuff in MLB". Hard to imagine, but Holmes said it was eye opening and that he was taking a new and improved plan to the mound. Once again tonight we were treated to lead off walks and multiple hanging breaking balls that became rockets. Looked like the regular Holmes to me. The Braves might limp to a division title but I'm not sure, especially after wasting another great start by Sale last night. The thought of Holmes or Elder starting a playoff game is actually frightening.
I believe that Atlanta’s problem is that their hitters are too passive. They don’t appear to have any Doberman’s in their lineup. They should be the ones with 7-10 runs each night and wanting to beat the opponent into submission. You can overcome bad pitching if your scoring runs at that rate. Weiss also has to become more aggressive at taking pitcher’s like Holmes out much sooner.
It just seems to be a continuous cycle with the offense, no matter who we play. It's ridiculous really. I think the worst game in the last couple of years, was wasting Chris Sale's brilliant outing. He has the second lowest ERA but it does not match his win/loss%. We are getting what we pay for with the starting pitching. We will get through the regular season with this pitching staff. But no way can we compete in the postseason
with hoping our starters will come back. I love my braves, but there are hard watch
I’m trying not to over-react to a bad start by Holmes or two bad losses at home. It’s a long season and bad losses are inevitable. But I agree completely with Lindsay’s comments about the use of AJSS and the lineup. The top priority is regular season wins for post season positioning… but right behind that priority is getting the pitching staff and lineup ready for the postseason. And to me that’s four priorities: 1. Preparing AJ for starts in the post-season, 2. Getting Suarez back on the mound. 3. Sorting out the last spots in the bullpen. (And it’s not Young. Is it Karinchak or someone else?). 4. Play the postseason lineup…Dubon at SS, platoon of Yaz and Lane in LF, Murphy catching and Drake as DH. Smith as DH when Drake is catching or resting. Besides giving guys days off, the “experimenting” needs to end.
