Great article (and episode)! Loved this discussions about candidates that are not the names everyone is talking about, but are real posible "AA candidates". This are the ones that usually we end up saying "maybe AA or someone in his office reads Braves Today"

It may be a thing where--if the dodgers are doing their dog walk through the West and the other big market teams are dominating teams may be closer to selling than holding on for this playoff run. The Giants last year were sellers and then made a run and almost made the playoffs. I could see more teams going ahead and selling knowing they still could possibly with the expanded playoffs make a run. The bar is so much lower. Get in and catch fire and anything can happen. That being said, the Braves may be able to pick up more for less in trades as other teams flood the market in the wake of so many super teams and so many others not being able to compete payroll wise.

Interesting & innovative approach that’s worth considering. But even using this approach, I still think having optionable quality pitchers in the system that are ready to come up and get outs is the only realistic insurance against staff injuries. Do we have minor leaguers (excluding Waldrep) that can effectively pitch 10-20% of the team’s innings (150-300 innings)? I like the idea that if the team appears poised to make a playoff run trading for a playoff level pitcher at the deadline might make sense, even if it’s a short term rental. But trying to sign FA pitchers just doesn’t seem reasonable. Ask the Cardinals. If reporting is accurate, their entire local TV rights revenue will pay the salary of a FA 4th starter.

Brilliant article! Couldn't agree more. Phillips would get my vote - I still can visualize his overpowering stuff carving up hitters late in games before his injury. Just another elite Dodger pitcher brought up from their minor league system. Like you said, we need players who will help win games, not just cover innings.

Bleavher Report Mock Draft #2 :

Braves take prep lefthander at 9. College righthander at 26.

I was hoping for power hitting outfielders, catchers.
