Why Are the Braves So Much Better at Home?

The Braves have protected their house in 2026. The reason why might have less to do with Truist Park than what they're doing inside it.

If you watched televised sports at any point in the mid-2000s, there’s a decent chance you remember a very angry man screaming at you about the importance of home security.

Okay, technically it wasn’t a home security commercial, it was for Under Armour.

The original “Protect This House” campaign featured former Maryland football player Eric Ogbogu stalking around a weight room, surrounded by increasingly fired-up athletes, before delivering the line that would become inescapable:

“WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE.”

Apparently, the mid-2000s were formative years for the 2026 Atlanta Braves, because holy hell have they protected this house.

The Braves are 48-24 at Truist Park.

Everywhere else?

35-33

That’s the difference between playing like one of MLB’s best teams and playing, well, barely .500 baseball.

This isn’t some sort of “breaking news: home-field advantage is real.” We know that already; it’s called an “advantage” for a reason. But a split this dramatic deserves better explanation than “they like sleeping in their own beds.”

Especially when the Phillies, like the Redcoats before them, are coming.

Atlanta plays Philadelphia seven times over the next ten days, four of them at Citizens Bank Park. The Braves have spent the past 140 games building a four-game NL East lead. Over the next ten days, they’ll play the team chasing them seven times.

Well, you do the math.

Atlanta’s lead in the division - and potentially their path to playing more October baseball in the place where they’ve been nearly unbeatable - could look dramatically different

So why, exactly, have the Braves been so much better at home?

Let’s talk about it.

Let’s quantify this for the offense

When we say the Braves have been better at home than on the road, it’s first important to establish why.

The why is the offense, which goes from above-average to below-average based on if they’re playing in Truist Park or not.

• Home: .259/.322/.433, 108 wRC+

• Away: .238/.303/.392, 91 wRC+

And while I wanted to give the slash line because that’s a commonly understood set of baseball statistics, wRC+ is an incredibly useful tool for us because it’s already adjusted for league and park.

And if it feels like this home-to-road split has gotten worse recently, you’d be right.

Since the All-Star Break, Atlanta’s home/road split has worsened:

• Home: .275/.336/.475, 42 homers in 27 games

• Road: .224/.278/.341, 15 homers in 18 games

Let’s data dump everything and figure out why:

Annnnnnd there’s some immediate discussion topics for us.

The strikeouts have spiked since the break

Before we can dive into contact quality, the Braves need to make contact first.

And that’s been harder as of late.

Atlanta’s post-break strikeout rate has climbed from 20.4% at home to 26.1% on the road, while their walk rate has dropped a full percent to 6.7%. That’s a strikeout-to-walk ratio spike from 2.64 at home to 3.87 on the road.

And some of the culprits are obvious when diving into the splits. Austin Riley’s road strikeout rate in the second half is 42.3%. Matt Olson’s is 41.6%, while Mike Yastrzemski is at 29.7%.

At home? Those three players in the second half have strikeout rates of 31.9%, 21.6%, and 26.9%, respectively.

Riley’s jumps more than 10 percentage points on the road, while Olson’s nearly doubles.

It’s not just “balls dying at the warning track” or “hard-hit balls right at someone”. Atlanta’s losing the plate appearance before the ball even gets put into play.

The contact quality is producing far fewer barrels

Since the All-Star Break, Atlanta’s producing virtually identical average exit velocities, launch angles, and hard-hit rates…but significantly less barrels and seeing much worse results on those batted balls.

And this is fascinating to me - How are the inputs virtually identical, but the outputs are so significantly different?

At home, Atlanta is combining the correct exit velocities and launch angles often enough to barrel 9.4% of its batted balls. On the road, the barrel rate falls to 5.6%. The Braves aren’t broadly hitting the ball softer away from home; they’re squaring it up much less frequently in the damage-producing window.

Diving into this, I initially assumed that the average launch angle stat is doing a lot of work of disguising what was actually happening there - the Braves were probably getting more pop-ups and more ground balls, which can somewhat cancel each other out, and the average launch angle could look roughly the same.

That’s not really the case.

Their line drive rate is slightly higher on the road at 19.8%, while the ground ball rate is up less than 2%, and virtually all of that change went to the fly ball rate, which dropped by less than 2%.

So the broad shape of Atlanta’s contact isn’t changing much, either. The Braves aren’t simply pounding the ball into the ground on the road or popping everything straight up.

The difference is happening inside those averages. A barrel requires the right combination of exit velocity and launch angle, and Atlanta is finding that sweet spot substantially more often at home.

Which raises another question: Is that skill, or just batted-ball luck?

No, it’s not really bad luck

While there’s room for improvement in Atlanta’s .287 road BABIP, the expected stats largely validate the idea that they’re just worse on the road since the All-Star Break:

• Road: .274 wOBA, .275 xwOBA

• Home: .351 wOBA, .331 xwOBA

The road offense has performed almost exactly as its contact quality predicts. The luck has shown up at home, but it’s good luck - a positive 20 points in wOBA beyond expected.

It’s possible that regression could narrow the gap from both ends, but they’re more susceptible to their home production deflating than they are to balls starting to fall on the road.

This is the part that surprised me.

If Atlanta were simply getting screwed by batted-ball variance away from home, we’d expect its road xwOBA to be considerably healthier than its actual results.

It isn’t.

The Braves have a .274 road wOBA since the break. Their expected wOBA is .275.

They’ve earned this.

Pulled air contact is some of it

I talk about PulledAir% a lot, and with good reason - the most productive type of batted ball is one that’s in the air to the pull side. Over a three-year sample, the 17.5% of batted balls that were pulled in the air produced 66% of all home runs in Major League Baseball.

The Braves have been better about elevating to the pull side at home, but not by that much - 19.5% in Truist as compared to 17.3% on the road. And again, the three-year average is roughly 17.5%, so they’re roughly average on the road yet not getting the results.

Atlanta’s overall post-break pulled-air rate is about 18.6%, so this is a slightly above-average pulled-air offense, not some uniquely optimized outlier. The two-point home advantage helps explain part of the HR/FB difference, but not a 52-point wRC+ split by itself.

And this ignores the bigger issue: that road pulled air contact is also less authoritative, resulting in fewer barrels and only an 8.6% HR/FB rate as compared to what they’re getting at home.

Let’s look at the individual players

When you look at the lineup regulars, plus one notable platoon player, you start to see a trend:

The team’s home/road split is mostly being produced by Atlanta’s “aircraft carriers” moving together, not whatever’s happening at the bottom of the order. Albies and Dubón have not been good enough after the break in either setting, while Yastrzemski has actually hit better away.

Riley’s split is the most concerning. His .415 home BABIP will fall, but his road BABIP is already .324. He has been terrible away despite receiving acceptable ball-in-play results because he is striking out and producing almost no power.

Olson’s home success looks more real - his home BABIP is only .279, while his .297 ISO is doing the heavy lifting. His road problem is overwhelmingly tied to the strikeout rate.

Acuña's in a weird place, with a .195 BABIP that's unsustainably low and due for some positive regression, but also a poor .098 ISO suggesting he's not simply having trouble getting grounders past infielders.

There is no matching pitching story here

Atlanta’s pitching staff has not enjoyed anything remotely close to the boost the offense gets playing at home.

If anything, it's been the opposite.

The virtually identical K-BB% is pretty useful, as it shows that the staff is controlling plate appearances at roughly the same rate regardless of location. Most of the road improvement in ERA looks to be tied to home run rate, which is considerably higher at Truist than on the road.

Individual pitchers have shown much larger splits, but not even those move consistently in one direction.

• Chris Sale: 1.45 home ERA, 2.71 road

• Martín Pérez: 1.99 home, 4.42 road

• Bryce Elder: 3.75 home, 4.93 road

• Grant Holmes: 4.54 home, 2.66 road

Raisel Iglesias, although not a starter, has a stark road/home split as well: 3.58 home, 2.01 road.

Could it be Truist Park?

The dimensions aren’t that unusual: 335 feet down the left-field line, 385 to left-center, 400 to center, 375 to right-center and 325 down the right-field line. The right-field wall is also 16 feet high, helping to offset the “short porch” that is The Chop House.

And Statcast’s three-year park factors give us an almost comically unhelpful answer:

Truist Park is basically perfectly neutral.

It’s important to point out that the one-year factors for just 2026 have the park at a 102 overall for offense and a 109 for home runs, but one-year park factors are volatile, and the three-year sample is much more convincing evidence than a single-season snapshot.

It’s not an obviously hitter-friendly park.
The pitchers aren’t better there.
The offense is.

But while the dimensions might not explain it, the building still might.

Final verdict

Atlanta has a legitimate home-field offensive advantage, but Truist Park’s dimensions probably aren’t its primary cause. The park’s long-term factors are essentially neutral, and the Braves’ pitching staff hasn’t received the same home boost.

But Truist can provide an advantage without its fences providing one.

The Trajekt Arc pitching machine installed at the ballpark allows Atlanta’s hitters to rehearse the arsenal, movement and release point of that day’s opposing pitcher before facing him, as well as allowing potential pinch hitters to prepare for relievers during the game. The post-break numbers are at least consistent with that kind of preparation advantage. Atlanta’s strikeout rate falls from 26.1% on the road to 20.4% at home, while its barrel rate rises from 5.6% to 9.4% despite virtually identical average exit velocities.

Reps That Replicate Reality

There’s also an intriguing connection to the three hitters I identified in February as particularly logical Trajekt beneficiaries. Since the break, Matt Olson has a 150 wRC+ at home and a 60 on the road. Austin Riley is at 144 and 45, respectively, while Michael Harris II has gone from a 99 road wRC+ to 143 at Truist.

That is not proof that the machine created the split. Atlanta’s home BABIP is elevated, the post-break samples remain limited, and their Trajekt usage is not publicly documented. Acuña’s equally extreme split also prevents this from fitting too neatly around those original three hitters.

The likeliest answer is still a combination: a normal home advantage magnified by favorable home results, a severe road strikeout problem, and several important hitters slumping simultaneously away from Atlanta. The 122-to-70 wRC+ chasm should narrow.

But the February theory now deserves a place in the discussion. Truist may be neutral as a ballpark while still being advantageous as a workplace. Atlanta’s hitters can take reps there that more closely replicate the reality awaiting them that night.

Whatever the exact combination, Atlanta has unquestionably protected its house this season. And with the Phillies coming to Truist next weekend, and the postseason not far behind, understanding why matters more than ever.

The fences may not explain the split. The reps might.
